Useful Neutrals
Neutrals do the quiet work of every painting. A canvas is mostly them: the grays, the near-blacks, the drab in-betweens that let the loud color speak. Buying them in tubes is how mixtures go dead, because a tube neutral belongs to no one. A mixed neutral remembers its parents and keeps their argument alive inside the gray. This chapter builds the working set from seven wells: the mixed black and its violet cousin, the tube black used honestly, an olive that surprises everyone once, a complement kill, and the two grays a studio actually runs on. Mix them once and you will stop buying gray.
