The Drying Clock

Acrylic tells one lie, and it tells it every single time: the color on your palette is not the color on your wall. The binder is milky while it is wet and clarifies as it cures, so every passage dries a step darker and a touch quieter than the mix you approved. Painters call it the morning-after color. This chapter is about painting on acrylic's clock: reading the dry chip instead of the wet swatch, aiming a step lighter on purpose, mixing darks that stay colors, and respecting the two pigments strong enough to run the whole bench. The dry chips here are computed from provisional curves and wear the modeled mark; your own test swatch is still the referee.
